Smoked trout mousse

Smoked trout mousse is a quick and easy dish, which is great on small pieces of bread and served as canapés, but it also makes a lovely lunch served on top of a slice of rye bread or other brown bread and drizzled with lemon juice.

You can also chose to serve the smoked trout mousse as a starter by shaping the mousse into the shape of an egg with the help of two spoons dipped in water. Serve the mousse on top of a crispy salad with a few lemon wedges and some bread on the side.

I used a very nice, organic smoked trout I found on a farmers’ market in Ireland, but really any kind will do. You can also use salmon instead.

This recipes serves two as a starter.


  • 100 g smoked trout or salmon (without any skin or fish bones)
  • 2 tbsp creme fraiche
  • 1 tbsp mayo
  • 1 tbsp chopped onion
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • salt and pepper
  • lemon
  • chives (optional)

Put all the ingredients apart from salt and pepper in a blender and blend until you have a smooth mousse. Season with salt and pepper and extra lemon juice if necessary. Leave in the fridge to set until ready to serve.

Decorate the trout mousse with mini lemon wedges and chives.
